What is henna?
Henna is the name for both the plant and the artwork. Yes, henna is a plant, and it stains the skin with a naturally produced dye from its leaves called lawsone. There is no ink involved, and it is not a tattoo. In fact, a wise fellow henna artist once said that henna is more like cake decorating than tattooing.
How long does it last?
Assuming that proper aftercare instructions were followed, designs on the limbs generally last about 7 to 10 days. For designs on the palms and soles of the feet, henna can last much longer; up to two weeks or more on those areas would not be uncommon.
How do I take care of my henna?
Keep it warm and keep it dry.
This applies whether you still have paste on, or the paste has already come off and you have a developing stain. Try to avoid water for the first 24 to 48 hours after the paste has come off and when the stain is still fresh on the skin (light to bright orange in color). If this is not possible, at least protect the stain first by applying a plant-based oil on the skin (coconut oil is great), do your water business, and then gently pat dry.
